What to Expect on the Water

This 6-hour trip kicks off bright and early from the Oregon Coast, where we'll load up the Susan K with all the gear you need for a productive day offshore. No need to fuss with licenses or tackle – we've got it all covered. As we motor out past the breakers, keep your eyes peeled for playful seals, soaring pelicans, and maybe even a whale spout in the distance. Once we hit our secret fishing grounds, it's all hands on deck as we deploy lines and start hunting for the telltale signs of fish. Whether we're trolling for salmon or dropping jigs for bottom fish, our crew will be right there to show you the ropes and help you land that trophy catch. And don't worry if you're new to this – we love teaching newbies the tricks of the trade. By the end of the day, you'll be swapping fish stories like a pro.

Insider Tips for Offshore Success

When it comes to offshore fishing, versatility is key. We'll likely start the day trolling for salmon, using downriggers to get our cut-plug herring down to where the big boys are cruising. Keep an eye on those rod tips – when they start bouncing, it's game on! If the salmon aren't cooperating, we'll switch gears and drop some heavy jigs to the bottom for lingcod and rockfish. These bruisers love to hang around rocky structure, so precision is crucial. We might even break out the live bait if conditions are right. And here's a pro tip: if you feel that tell-tale thump of a lingcod, don't set the hook right away. Give it a few seconds to really chomp down, then reel like crazy. Trust me, nothing beats the fight of a big ling coming up from the depths. Oh, and don't forget to bring a camera – the colors on these fish are something else when they first come aboard.

Species You'll Want to Hook

Coho Salmon: Also known as silvers, these acrobatic fighters are a summer favorite off the Oregon Coast. Typically ranging from 6-12 pounds, coho are known for their spectacular aerial displays when hooked. They start showing up in June and peak in August and September. Their flesh is a beautiful orange-red and makes for some of the best grilling you'll ever taste. When a school of coho moves through, the action can be fast and furious – be ready to grab that rod!

Lingcod: These prehistoric-looking predators are the bulldogs of the Pacific. With their massive heads and needle-sharp teeth, lingcod are ambush hunters that love to hang around rocky structure. They can grow over 50 pounds, though a good-sized ling in the 15-30 pound range will give you all the fight you can handle. Lingcod are available year-round, but winter and early spring often produce the biggest fish. Their white, flaky meat is prized for fish and chips.

Chinook Salmon: The king of Pacific salmon, chinooks (or kings) are the heavyweight champs of the salmon world. While average fish run 10-25 pounds, 40+ pounders are caught every year. They're available from spring through fall, with peak season usually in July and August. Chinooks are known for their powerful runs and deep fights – when one of these bruisers takes off, you'd better hang on tight! Their rich, oil-packed flesh is considered the ultimate in salmon eating.

Black Rockfish: These aggressive schooling fish are a blast to catch and a staple of the Oregon bottomfish scene. While they typically run 2-5 pounds, their willingness to bite and scrappy fights make them perfect for anglers of all skill levels. You'll often catch them two at a time when you find a hungry school. Black rockfish are available year-round and make excellent eating with their mild, white flesh. They're especially good for fish tacos!

Why Anglers Keep Coming Back

There's something special about fishing the Oregon Coast that keeps folks coming back year after year. Maybe it's the rugged beauty of the coastline, with its towering cliffs and misty forests. Or perhaps it's the thrill of never knowing what might grab your line next – a chrome-bright salmon, a toothy lingcod, or even a surprise halibut. But I think what really hooks people is the sense of adventure. When you push off from the beach in a dory boat, watching the surf recede behind you, there's a feeling of endless possibility. Will today be the day you land that 40-pound king salmon? Or maybe you'll pull up a crab pot full of meaty Dungeness? Out here, every trip is different, and that's what makes it so addictive. Plus, with a private charter like this, you've got the flexibility to fish how you want, when you want. It's like having your own floating fish camp for the day.

Black Rockfish

Black rockfish are a staple of our Oregon Coast fishery. These aggressive schooling fish usually run 2-5 pounds and hang out near rocky reefs and kelp beds in 30-300 feet of water. You can catch them year-round, but summer and fall are prime time. Blacks are fun to catch - they hit hard and put up a good scrap on light tackle. Plus, their white, flaky meat is excellent for fish and chips. We often find them mixed in with other rockfish species, so you never know what you'll pull up. My favorite way to target them is with shrimp fly rigs tipped with bait. Drift them near the bottom and hang on - when you hit a school, it's non-stop action. Just watch out for their sharp spines when unhooking them. For an easy, fun day of fishing with great eating as a bonus, you can't beat black rockfish.

Black Rockfish

Chinook Salmon

Chinook, or king salmon, are the heavyweight champs of the Pacific salmon world. These bruisers average 15-30 pounds but can top 50. We find them in the ocean from spring through fall, often in 100-300 feet of water near underwater structure or bait schools. Kings are prized for their rich, flavorful meat and their legendary fighting ability. When a big one hits, hang on tight - they'll peel line like nobody's business. Trolling with herring or anchovies works well, but my secret weapon is a whole sardine rigged behind a flasher. Kings seem to find that irresistible. The best time to target them is usually July through September when they're fattening up before the spawning run. Landing a trophy king is a real achievement - it'll test your skills and give you a fishing story to tell for years.

Chinook Salmon

Coho Salmon

Coho salmon, also called silvers, are a favorite among anglers here on the Oregon Coast. These acrobatic fish typically run 8-12 pounds, though some monsters push 20+. You'll find them in coastal rivers and the nearshore ocean, often hanging around kelp beds and current seams. Fall is prime time as they return to spawn, but we can target them in the ocean all summer long. Coho put up an amazing fight, with spectacular jumps and blistering runs. Their orange-red meat is prized for its rich flavor too. When targeting coho, I like to troll with flashy spoons or hoochies behind a flasher - that extra bling really seems to trigger their aggression. Just be ready when they hit, because these guys don't mess around!

Coho Salmon

Lingcod

Lingcod are the bulldogs of the Pacific. These aggressive predators lurk around rocky reefs and kelp beds, ambushing anything they can fit in their massive, toothy jaws. Most lings we catch run 10-20 pounds, but 40-pounders aren't unheard of. They're not fast swimmers, but man can they pull when hooked. You'll find them year-round in 30-300 feet of water, often right on the bottom. Lings are a blast to catch and make for some of the best fish tacos you'll ever taste. My go-to trick is using oversized jigs in bright colors - lings can't resist 'em. Just be careful of those teeth when you're unhooking one! The fight and the eating make lingcod a favorite target for a lot of our guests.
